I wrote to all members back in June about the issues surrounding this year’s Annual Dinner, scheduled for 12 November 2020, in the wake of the continuing lockdown situation. I explained that the Committee would be making a final decision about now as to whether we can go ahead with the Dinner and that I would let you know what that decision was.
Since that email we have monitored relevant developments and had a number of discussions with the venue. The key question is how many people we would be able to accommodate given current restrictions on numbers of those gathering and mingling. Until very recently that number was 30 but, in line with the Government’s recent introduction of the Rule of Six, that has now gone down to a total of 6. For obvious reasons, the venue is unable to indicate when these rules might change.
Having given careful consideration to the situation, and with a very heavy heart the Committee has resolved that, given these restrictions, for obvious reasons we cannot sensibly go ahead with the Dinner this year. Indeed, that would have been the case whether the event was restricted to 30 attendees or 6.
Clearly this is a very disappointing outcome as this will be the first time in 30 years there hasn’t been an annual dinner, but let’s all look forward to the Annual Dinner 2021 and make sure it swings like never before!
